The picture was taken in November, and they are still flowering their socks off in the herbaceous borders. They are in mounds of about 2ft high and the same wide. They make gorgeous cut flowers for the house, and last for ages.

Also known as Mount Etna Broom it can grow to tree like proportions and will tolerate high winds, salt, and dry conditions.
This is the second flush of bloom.   It also blooms April to June.

yuccavariegata.jpg (125569 bytes)   Yucca variegata from Salli

I love the way the low winter sun catches this plant. Watch out for sharp leaves though!

fatsiajaponica.jpg (99732 bytes)   Fatsia japonica from Salli

I grow this plant for its exotic looking foliage, although it's tough as old boots. These interesting flowers are a bonus at this time of year.

senecio_pulcher.jpg (16861 bytes)   Senecio pulcher from Chrissie

This unusual plant for the front of the autumn border  is an evergreen perennial. It forms a low-growing clump of green leaves with slightly wavy edges, and in October produces tall stems topped with two or three bright cerise daisy-like flowers with bright yellow centres. Quite an unusual colour for a Senecio, whose flowers are often yellow. It's not particularly hardy though, so I have it in a sheltered spot on the warm south-facing patio.

pernettya.jpg (79583 bytes)   Pernettya mucronata from Salli

Common name -  "Prickly Heath" suggests it might be thorny, but it is not.

It is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with leaves that are glossy green most of the year, occasionally bronzy in winter. It bears small white to pink bell-shaped flowers in May & June. The fruits vary in color depending on the cultivar, & these fruits are the main reason this shrub is an outstanding beauty.

teasels.jpg (51852 bytes)   Teasels from Byrony

Teasels make fine, architectural plants in the garden. Spiny flower-heads rise out of the prickly rosette of leaves in summer. These are covered in pinkish purple or white flowers in mid- to late summer. They then dry to an attractive shade of brown and make fine dried flowers for arrangements. This pic shows how good they are in December.
Teasels are biennials so they need to be sown in late spring where they are to flower the following year. Beware that once they are established them will self-seed freely.
