Such a beautiful colour and I don't mind it self-seeding everywhere!  Clay soil

The Columbine (Aquilegia) is an easy plant to grow because it adapts itself to a wide variety of conditions. Columbines do best however, when they are grown in moist, rich, well drained soil in light shade. Plants should be set out the garden in spring or late summer. Plant them one to two feet apart with the crown (where the roots and tops meet) at soil level.

It grows in a shady corner with its roots under the decking which it loves!  Clay soil

To prune, remove any dead or weak stems in late winter or early spring and cut remaining stems back to the highest pair of strong-growing buds. To encourage blooms to cover the whole plant, train the stems so that they are evenly spaced on their support. As new growth appears in mid-spring, train this to fill any gaps.
