Irritant Plants

          

 
 

Lots of plants can cause irritation to the skin when touched, but often we never know which plant has done the damage.   Here are some of the ones that could be culprits.   Remember though that not all people will be affected by all of these plants.

 
Acalypha - Skin & Eye Irritant Actaea - Skin Irritant Aglaonema - Skin & Eye Irritant Allamanda - Skin & Eye Irritant
Alocasia - Skin & Eye Irritant Alstroemeria - May cause skin allergy Anthurium - Skin & Eye Irritant Arisaema - contains small needle-like crystals of calcium oxalate that cause intense irritation and burning of the mouth and tongue.
Arum - Sap may cause local inflammation of the skin and eye irritation Asparagus Fern - May cause skin allergy Caladium - Skin & Eye Irritant Calla palustris - Skin & Eye Irritant
Capsicum annum - ornamental cultivars - skin & eye irritant Chelidonium majus - Greater Celandine - skin & eye irritant Chrysanthemum - May cause skin allergy Colocasia esculenta - Skin & eye irritant
Cupressocyparis leylandii - May cause skin allergy, including via smoke from burning branches. Daphne - Skin Irritant Dendranthema - severe skin irritant Dieffenbachia - Skin & Eye Irritant.  Causes intense irritation & burning of mouth and tongue
Fremontodendron - Skin & Eye Irritant Helleborus - Christmas Rose - skin irritant Heracleum - Giant Hogweed - Foliage can cause blisters on the skin Parthenocissus quinquefolia - Virginia Creeper - Skin irritant
Primula obconica - May cause skin alIergy.  Some people cannot be in same room. Ruta graveolens - severely toxic to skin.  Wash hands after handling
